The Department of Bioresource Engineering of McGill University invites applications for a tenure-track, 12-month position as Assistant Professor in Urban Agriculture and Plant Production Engineering. The successful candidate will address several closely related fields in the discipline, particularly design of food production systems for urban, local, and northern agriculture. The scope of the position may include, but is not limited to: urban agriculture, green structures (green walls, edible walls, green roofs, ornamental displays, medicinal plants, rooftop greenhouses and gardens), regenerative building design (ecomimetic and biological processes for water collection, heat island mitigation, waste reduction), and climate control for biological and agricultural buildings and structures. The Department of Bioresource Engineering is part of the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences on the Macdonald Campus, located 35 km west of Montreal’s city center and the downtown Campus. The Macdonald Campus Farm, Horticulture Centre, and the main Macdonald Campus are incubation sites that may be used as applied laboratories to generate ideas, build and test experimental structures, and apply the research to biological and agricultural production systems. There is the capacity for outreach to surrounding urban and rural communities. Emphasizing urban agriculture and engineered plant production systems will increase the ties with the food production sectors and deliver cutting-edge McGill teaching and research.
If eligible for the Canada Research Chair (CRC) program, the candidate may be supported by the University in the nomination for a Tier II CRC in Urban Agriculture and Plant Production Engineering, which provides protected time for research within a full-time academic appointment.
The ideal candidate must be eligible to register as a professional engineer in Canada. Proficiency in the French language and prior experience with the Canadian agricultural and agri-food industry are highly beneficial.
