- Senior Mining Process Engineer
Description
Company Description & Purpose
Allonnia’s purpose is the pursuit of sustainable solutions to the world’s toughest waste challenges, because we believe waste is a failure of imagination. We develop and deploy sustainable technologies that leave the planet better than we found it, creating a positive net environmental footprint. By leveraging nature’s own ingenuity and the power of engineered systems, we deliver scalable solutions that remediate emerging contaminants and enhance mining sustainability to extract value from waste and strengthen critical mineral supply chains.
Allonnia is a five-year-old, Boston-based company looking for team members who want to develop innovations for real customers, solving real problems and delivering sustainable solutions to the world. Sound interesting? It is! Bring your adaptability, creativity, team mindset, and drive to commercialize technology that will make an impact for decades to come.
Mission of the Position
The primary objective of this role, as part of Allonnia’s Application Development team, is to develop and deploy sustainable solutions that help decarbonize the mining industry. Our team plays a critical role in integrating D-Solve™ into customers’ operations, delivering a technology that is both economically compelling and environmentally transformative. Check out the 2-minute video of our D-Solve™ solution and see the kind of impact you could have by joining us.
As part of the D-Solve™ team, you will collaborate closely with product development, analytical science, and the broader application development team. In this mining process engineer role, you will design and implement innovative flowsheets and deployment strategies that solve customers’ varied challenges using Allonnia’s D-Solve™ process. You will lead demonstrations and pilots that showcase D-Solve™ in real-world environments, and generate analyses and insights — including techno-economic assessments and mass balance evaluations — that support customers’ capital approval processes.
Key Criteria/Requirements
Advanced degree in engineering is preferred, with a focus in mineral processing, metallurgy, chemical, or environmental engineering.
Minimum 10 years of engineering technical experience with increasing scope and responsibilities, including product design, testing/analysis, engineering documentation, and innovative technology development.
Experience in mineral processing applications, such as agitated leach, flotation, or hydrometallurgy, is required.
Experience with innovative design and evaluation of chemical processing systems, including experience with operations and troubleshooting of process engineering, is required.
Experience in industrial water treatment applications involving treatment of metals, such as ion exchange, reverse osmosis, or flocculation, is a plus.
Familiarity with engineering design software (e.g., AutoCAD).
Demonstrated ability to work innovatively and collaboratively across teams to develop new technology.
Ability to develop process improvements and creatively apply known approaches in new ways.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Thriving in a fast-paced environment. Must be capable of supporting multiple projects that are deadline-oriented, handle interruptions, and be flexible with changing tasks
Passion for the startup environment, and able to work from ground zero to help develop the team
MSHA certification is preferred.
Position may be remote from our Boston office/lab space; if not based in Boston, at least one week per month in Boston for a quarter will be expected and then reduced as-needed
Travel to test/customer locations for testing and validation of the D-Solve process is expected
Measurable Accountabilities
Partner in the design of mining substrate-specific D-Solve™ deployment strategies that integrate seamlessly with customer mining processes.
Drive continual improvement of deployed processes (demo and pilot) by identifying bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and opportunities for performance enhancement — and documenting and implementing solutions.
Develop insights from operating pilot data that inform improvements for subsequent pilot operations including identifying bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and opportunities for performance enhancement — and documenting and implementing solutions.
Complete assessment and preliminary design of a mobile demo unit that could accelerate innovation within Allonnia’s mining platform.
Author and deliver customer-facing project reports that clearly articulate results, insights, and recommended next steps.
Provide input and expertise to the R&D team to further the process engineering design of our key technologies, including mass and water balance evaluations that inform scale-up and deployment decisions.
Develop and refine process flowsheets grounded in experimental data; identify critical operating conditions and guide subsequent testing priorities.
Lead techno-economic analysis efforts (TEA) for new applications, guiding early-stage business and technical decision paths.
Refine TEA models informed by data from demonstrations and pilot, ensuring credible, defensible, and investment-ready analyses for customers.
