Formed by the upper Ohio River watershed, the Pittsburgh District’s civil works missions include navigation, hydropower, flood risk management, ecosystem restoration, water supply, wetlands regulation, recreation, and disaster preparedness and response. The district works to reduce the risk of flooding, protect and restore the environment, and maintain and upgrade the area’s aging water resource i...nfrastructure. To accomplish this, the district operates 16 flood damage reduction reservoirs and 23 locks and dam facilities, and we oversee more than 80 local flood damage reduction projects. As a civil works district, we have an Army colonel assigned as District Commander, but our technical managers, engineers and most of our more than 600 employees are civilians. District employees also volunteer for the Corps’ infrastructure rebuilding efforts in several countries around the world, including Iraq and Afghanistan.
